People in Cancun and the Riviera Maya are often in a Hurry, either they want to get to the airport to catch a flight, or transportation companies slightly rushing to pick tourists. In general driving in Cancun is safe, but keeping extra precautions is recommended.

What are the roads like Cancun, Mexico?

The quality of the roads in Cancun & the Riviera Maya is good but keep your eyes open for potholes, specifically in rural areas. Highways and Centric/Touristic places usually have a good condition.

How will I find the drivers in Cancun, Mexico?

Stop signs sometimes are not respected as much as they are in the US, so be extra careful and attentive. Also, be cautious to slight turns from drivers as it may be the case that people don’t mark their following turns.

What are the driving laws?

It is compulsory to wear seatbelts in both the front and rear seats of the vehicle. Exceeding the speed limits in Mexico is a serious offence and speeding is strictly monitored. In the event of an accident, you must not move your vehicle unless it is causing an obstruction or is a serious hazard to other road users. Wait until the appropriate authorities arrive.

Important things to note

The Mexican military operate at border control and at various checkpoints throughout Mexico. They will require you’re an ID, and it’s likely they will search your vehicle for drugs or weapons. Be patient, courteous and comply with their requests. They have the right to search your car.
